 A ground breaking ceremony for the reconstruction and rehabilitation works of Erigavo Regional Hospital was held today in Erigavo. The event marks the start of the construction and rehabilitation of the Erigavo Regional Hospital component of the Sool and Sanaag Health Project. The project is implemented by the Somaliland Ministry of Health and funded by the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF).

The project aims to improve access to secondary health care services to the people of Sanaag through the rehabilitation and re-equipment of Erigavo Hospital and the reviving of its management systems. Upon completion, Erigavo Hospital will be a model hospital in the region, providing affordable secondary health care services to the people in Sanaag. After completion of the construction phase, the hospital will be equipped with adequate pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostic equipment, as well as qualified and competent clinicians. When fully operationalized, people in Sanaag region will no longer have to travel to other regions in search of medical services.

The launching ceremony was presided over by Mr. Mahmoud Adan Jama, State Minister of Health, and attended by senior government officials including Ahmed Abdi, the Governor of Sanaag, Ismail H. Nur, the Mayor of Erigavo, Suleiman Jama Deria, Director General of Ministry of Health and local community representatives.

Speaking at the launch, the State Minister of Health highlighted the importance of this health project for Somaliland citizens, particularly those in Sanaag region. "A lot of effort has been made by the Government of Somaliland to secure projects that support key social services, particularly reviving the health services of Sanaag region. I commend the continuous support of SDF donors in funding projects that are fully aligned with the Somaliland National Development Plan. This is not the only project implemented by the Government in the Sanaag region. There are many other projects including education, water and fisheries which are all funded by the Somaliland Development Fund and implemented by the different Government ministries. The hospital, when fully functional, will provide secondary health services to the people in Sanaag region and people in this region will not have to travel to Hargeisa to avail clinical services", said the State Minister.

Other health project activities implemented by the Ministry of Health and funded by the SDF in Sool and Sanaag Regions include:

  1. Hospital service management of Erigavo and Las Anod Regional Hospitals;
  2. Provision of drugs, medical equipment and consumables to enhance quality of clinical services in both hospitals;
  3. Construction and rehabilitation of Las Anod Regional Hospital (currently ongoing);
  4. Supply of ambulances and office vehicles to enhance referral services in the regions;
  5. Capacity development and system building of Erigavo and Las Anod Regional Hospitals to enhance quality service delivery.

 The Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) is a 4-year fund designed to support the Government of Somaliland (GoSL) filling a critical gap supporting projects that are fully aligned to the National Development Plan (NDP). SDF is currently funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The management of the SDF Secretariat has been contracted to BMB Mott MacDonald, an international consulting company, which is responsible for the management of the Fund on behalf of the Government of Somaliland and the donors. The SDF has allocated funding for the implementation of various activities implemented by the Ministry of Health.
